On the 22nd, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, a well-known Japanese pharmaceutical company, said that some consumers who took health products containing red yeast produced by the company recently showed symptoms such as kidney diseases.
In view of this situation, the company decided to recall three related products containing the relevant ingredients, with a total of about 300,000 copies. That night, the president of Kobayashi Pharmaceutical held a press conference and bowed to apologize for the problem. At this emergency press conference, Kobayashi Zhanghao, the president of Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, publicly apologized, saying: First of all, I sincerely apologize to customers whose health has been damaged. I hope that customers who have purchased several related health products will stop taking them immediately. I am really sorry.
On the 26th, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced the second case of death after taking the related health products. The number of hospitalizations has increased to 106, and it called on consumers to stop using the affected products.

According to Kobayashi Pharmaceutical’s explanation, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical received a report from a medical institution in January that a patient had developed renal dysfunction after taking a health product containing red koji (red yeast) produced by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical. Since then, several similar reports have been received one after another. After analyzing several related products, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical confirmed that the “unexpected component” may be contained in the red koji (red yeast) used in these raw materials. It is not yet certain that this component is directly related to the onset of kidney diseases. Some medical experts believe it may be related to allergies.
In view of this situation, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical decided to recall related products. It is said that the same red yeast raw materials were supplied to 52 domestic and foreign food manufacturers. Up to now, at least 30 related soy sauce and miso food operators in Japan have announced the voluntary recall and stop of sales.
In addition, on the 26th, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare named Kobayashi Pharmaceutical to hold a hearing and listened to the report on the incident of two consumers’ deaths caused by the product rollover. The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare notified Osaka City to take measures such as the abolition of three products “red yeast cholesterol granules”, “endotoxin helper + cholesterol”, and “nattokinase dry granules GOLD (gold)” according to the Food Hygiene Law. In response, Osaka City issued a product recall order to Kobayashi Pharmaceutical on the 27th. Kobayashi Pharmaceutical is scheduled to hold a shareholders’ meeting in Osaka City on the 28th.
